The VW Group accelerates, dragged by ID.4 and ID.3

VW Group electric car deliveries in the third quarter and all of 2021. Figures in thousands.

The total in the first 9 months of 2021 sale a 293.100: we are still a long way from Tesla’s numbers (627.350), but the chase continues. Also because the Group can count on 5 brands, which will soon become six when a VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat e Porsche will be added Cupra. To pull the sprint, of course, is the Volkswagen brand, which registered in 9 months 167.800 EV, including ID.3, ID.4 and e-Up (57% of the Group’s total). Audi follows with 52.800 units (18%), SKODA with 32.100 (11%), Porsche with 28,600 (10%) and SEAT with 8.800 (by 3%). As for the best-selling models, an SUV is confirmed in the lead, the VW ID.4, with 72,700 units, in front of ID.3 (52.700. Then the Audi e-tron, including the version Sportback (36.100), the Porsche Taycan, including the Cross Turismo (28.600) and the SKODA Enyaq iV (28.200). It is obvious that these numbers have a different specific weight, depending on the prices. And from here affects the performance of the Taycan.

The Audi e-tron, in 3rd place among the VW Group’s best-selling electric.

The challenge to Tesla continues, but the road is long

The Group Sales Manager, Christian Dahlheim, explains: “Our global electric offensive continues in full swing: we are the leader in Europe for 100% electric vehicles, and 2nd in the United States. In China, EV deliveries took off in Q3, nearly 60% more than in the first half of the year. The strong demand brings us closer to the goal of one million vehicles between pure electric and plug-in hybrids“. In fact, the sale of the latter has also increased considerably: they have been delivered in total 246.000 in the first nine months of the year. More than double compared to the same period in 2020 (+ 133%). Despite the progress made in China, Europe remains by far the first market for the group’s EVs, with 72% of the total in 2021. These are all numbers that, as we said, suggest that only Volkswagen, among the German groups, with its firepower can challenge Tesla. BMW and Mercedes, as we have seen, they are still on much smaller numbers
