A discharge of stones, the impressive noise and, after a few moments, the cloud of rock dust rising to the sky. Scenes from a landslide. Precisely the one that fell this afternoon from a crest of the Croda Marcora, in the Sorapiss group, above San Vito di Cadore (Belluno). One of the most famous areas of the Dolomites, which helps to form the spectacular rocky cirque that embraces the Cortina d’Ampezzo basin. A not so rare event, in the Dolomites, formed by particularly fragile sedimentary rock and sensitive to atmospheric agents. But the scene was certainly impactful and within a few minutes the social networks were filled with photos and images of what happened. The roar was distinctly heard in San Vito di Cadore, in particular by the inhabitants of Chiapuzza, the nearest hamlet. The landslide, which took place at 2,800 meters above sea level, did not involve houses or people, because the area is totally uninhabited. The firefighters immediately went to the site, with 10 men (including permanent staff from Cortina and volunteer firefighters from Auronzo) with 3 vehicles, to assess the extent of the landslide and secure the area.
