“There is no greater and more demanding challenge for humanity than climate change. It is a dramatic reality, of which the peoples of Africa have had direct experience for decades ”. This was stated this morning by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in his speech at the Ministerial Conference “Encounters with Africa”.
“In the fight against climate change, there is no longer a time for ambiguity and distinction”, the Head of State warned, reiterating that “we need to act now so as not to definitively jeopardize the quality of life and survival of future generations”. “We must guarantee the maximum effort to reach and exceed the targets for the reduction of harmful emissions that we collectively assumed from Kyoto to Paris”, continued Mattarella, recalling that “the preCop and ‘Youth for the Climate’ have once again made the ‘urgency to act, also through the voices of many young people who have made this commitment a reason for living ”. According to the president, “the next COP26 will represent a watershed, we must all be aware of that”. “The major responsibilities fall on the countries of old and new industrialization. It is not allowed to get distracted ”, the Head of State warned, underlining that“ the African continent is called to make its voice heard and not only because it is at the forefront in dealing with its effects ”.
