Emirs, real estate developers, more or less known international consortiums. The Municipality of Campione d’Italia, crushed by debts, sells the villas and the port to raise cash while the casino, after the cancellation of the bankruptcy, needs capital to reopen by the end of the year. Circumstances that attracted attention to the former Italian paradise in the heart of the Canton of Ticino, facing an unprecedented crisis since 2018. The city council has approved a plan that provides for the sale of the five most valuable properties – Villa Mimosa and Villa Franchini, the municipal police headquarters, a building plot and the port – with the aim of collecting at least 20 million euros. The announcement will be published in the next few days, but in the meantime the signs of interest were not lacking and at least four emissaries of consortiums interested in real estate shopping in the enclave arrived in Campione. The mayor Roberto Canesi is not unbalanced, but confirms the attention on the town and does not hide the fact that the success of the sales plan would be decisive for the relaunch of Campione. “The notice for sale, in line with the provisions of the Territory Governance Plan, it will be ready shortly – he says -. I can say that we have had some initial expressions of interest. I do not know who will actually submit an offer, we hope that whoever will be really is determined to develop tourism and commerce, a strategic area for the country that needs to restart ».
The name that circulates with greater insistence is that of the Milanese real estate developer Ernesto Preatoni, founder of the Domina Vacanze Group. The entrepreneur, resident in Lugano, does not hide an interest in Campione already shown in 2018, after the closure of the gambling house. And the focus could range from buildings for sale to the gambling house itself. “Campione is attractive and can only be relaunched as a whole”he repeated. In essence, around the green tables, a system of shops, hotels, entertainment and services would be needed to offer a complete experience, which goes beyond the gambling house.
The Arab market
Alongside that of Preatoni, there is also the name of a Qatari fund that could buy up real estate and invest in Campione d’Italia, changing the face of the country and transforming it into a point of reference also for the Arab market. At least two other consortiums would then be ready to make an offer. There is no official confirmation, but the publication of the announcement for the auction of municipal properties should reveal the cards. In the meantime, concrete steps are also expected for the casino, starting with the plan to recruit employees. “The stumbling blocks are there and we await the meeting of creditors to decide on the arrangement, but we are confident and the goal remains to reopen by the end of the year,” reiterates the mayor of Campione.
