A shock of earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale was recorded today morning, Monday 27 September, on the island of Chalk, at a depth of 13 kilometers.
The earthquake, according to what was communicated by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Ingv) which recorded its magnitude, occurred at 08.17 Italian time. (Other institutes have provided slightly diverging magnitude estimates, between 5.8 and 6.5).
According to preliminary information, the earthquake shook the buildings of the whole island and of its most important city, Heraklion. According to reports from Reuters, many people have poured out of their homes. The epicenter would be located 7 kilometers north of the village of Thrapsano.
There is currently no information about any damage to people or property: the only report, at this time, concerns two people who would be trapped in two buildings.
