Gleaner of Sapri, the sexist statue triggers controversy

A new statue of the Gleaner of Sapri, in his city: a symbol, that of the woman who collects the ears, which since 1858 has been linked to the municipality of Cilento thanks to the famous anti-Bourbon poetry of Luigi Mercantini, inspired by the expedition of Carlo Pisacane. “They were three hundred, they were young and strong and they died”, this is the beginning of the poem that many Italian students remember by heart.
