19 years after Bellpuig 2002, Italy returns to win the Motocross of Nations! Tony Cairoli, Mattia Guadagnini and Alessandro Lupino give the Italian movement the third triumph in history in one of the most spectacular and prestigious events in global motorsport, triumphing in front of the Italian public present at the “Tazio Nuvolari” in Mantua at the end of a hellish day from the point of weather view.
The result of race-3 was decisive, reserved for the MXGP and Open categories, with the second place for a fantastic Cairoli (who dispels the Nations taboo at the very last attempt) and the 17th of Alessandro Lupino, penalized by 10 positions for having taken advantage of going off the track at the start. On balance, the overtaking of the “Lupo” against the Lithuanian Karlis Sabulis in the final stages of the heat for the seventh position on the track was decisive.
L‘Italy won the overall standings by just one point over Holland, to which a monstrous Jeffrey Herlings (absolute dominator with almost 1 ‘of margin on the second) and a remarkable third place of Glenn Coldenhoff was not enough to complete the comeback and defend the title obtained two years ago in Assen.
Complete the podium of the 74th edition of the Motocross of Nations Great Britain, detached by only two points from Italy (and one point from Oranje) after Ben Watson’s fourth place and Shaun Simpson’s sixth in the decisive run.
Out of the top3 a good Russia, fourth to 5 points from the podium, and, above all, the France. The French had become the big favorites after race-1, but the retirement of Tom Vialle in the second heat and Boisrame’s 19th place in race-2 have relegated them to fifth place overall with 13 points behind the lead.
