The McLaren Briton: “I stayed on track because no one told me that conditions would get worse”. The Ferrari driver: “I waited to mount the intermediates, I would have created problems for Sainz”
They are the two big disappointments of the F1 Russian GP, Charles Leclerc and above all Lando Norris. The Ferrari driver sacrificed his race when the rain got intense, “so as not to ruin the performance of my partner Carlos Sainz and the team,” he explains. The British McLaren, in command for most of the race, remained on the track with slick tires despite the heavy rain, ill-advised from the garage, as he reveals. A Sunday, and a mood, black for both of us.
the controversy of norris
“Of course I was hoping to win,” Norris himself confessed to Sky Sport. “I stayed out because I thought the track was holding, the rain wasn’t that strong and we didn’t anticipate it would start to intensify. Other teams got the prediction right, we didn’t, the others were better. Both me and the team made a mistake ”, hissed the young Brit, who started from pole position. “I’m very disappointed, we had a great weekend, but one decision cost us all the work.”
Charles was very disappointed, how to blame him in the end. He also stayed on track in the rain and lost control of his SF21 ruining the race. But his explanation exalts the Ferrari spirit: “It was a difficult decision to choose the pit stop, when the time was right I preferred to postpone so as not to mess with Carlos, I would have risked damaging him if I had returned at the same time, and I would have created problems for the team. Then, when I returned, everything was compromised ”. The disappointment of the Monegasque was evident, at the end 15th: “How can I find positive aspects? You can’t, I’m very disappointed. The power unit? Yes, that’s a good note for the team and it’s okay, but I’m disappointed ”.
