Puigdemont was arrested Thursday in Sassari by the border police on a European mandate. On 30 October 2017, the Catalan leader was expatriated to Belgium, in Brussels, to avoid arrest because he was accused of rebellion. Against him, since he refused to return to Spain, the Madrid authorities had issued a European arrest warrant.
A month later the Supreme Court had withdrawn this measure. In this way Puigdemont could travel to raise awareness of his cause in the international community, but he could not return to Spain due to the national arrest warrant.
Extradition hearing set for 4 October – Accepting the request of the Attorney General, the Court of Appeal of Sassari released Carles Puigdemont. The former president of Catalonia is free to move, no precautionary measures are imposed on him. Puigdemont returns free and attacks: “Spain makes itself ridiculous” – Carles Puigdemont attacks Madrid after being arrested and released pending the extradition hearing on 4 October in Sardinia. “Spain never misses an opportunity to make a fool of itself,” he says after leaving the Sassari prison. Beside him were the Sardinian president Christian Solinas, the Catalan authorities and his lawyer.
Case closed (for Italy) if he does not appear in the courtroom – If on 4 October Carles Puigdemont does not appear at the hearing before the Court of Appeal of Sassari and it is ascertained that she is not in our country, the case must be concluded for Italy with a ruling of no place to proceed. In fact, the procedure provides that in the event of absence from the courtroom, the judge must instruct the police to check whether Puigdemont is in Italy. And if the research fails, the obligatory path will be the closure of the case.
