– SOCHI (Russia)

It was a possibility, Red Bull finally decided to try: a new power unit for Max Verstappen who will therefore start from the back of the starting grid of the Russian GP. A tactical move to adapt to the current situation, which already included three penalty positions on the starting grid due to the Dutch Red Bull’s maneuver against Lewis Hamilton on the 26th lap of the last Italian GP.

strategy

The first free practice in Sochi confirmed that Mercedes on this track has an extra gear and therefore Red Bull has decided to break the delay: completely new power unit for the Dutchman who, however, will be able to count on a more powerful engine from the next races. fresh in the challenge with Hamilton, who this weekend therefore potentially has a great chance of returning to the top of the championship.

So many unknowns

At the moment Verstappen has a 5-point advantage over Hamilton and therefore the situation could completely reverse on Sunday. But the Russian GP is still a race with many unknowns, especially the weather. If Sunday ran in the wet as abundantly predicted, situations of potential Safety Car could mix the cards and allow Verstappen to climb to the top positions, minimizing the loss of points from Hamilton that Red Bull has evidently already put into the account. The same is what Ferrari hopes, which has changed the power unit of Charles Leclerc and hopes in the rain to recover from the bottom of the race that starts at 14 Italian.
