The Milanista’s brace and the goals of Gama, Girelli and Cernoia in the recovery are worth the full points for the Bertolini girls in group G, despite the electric blackout in Karlovac

Italy has not turned off the light. In Karlovac, despite an interruption of over an hour in the second half due to a failure in the lighting system of the stadium, Milena Bertolini’s national team achieved their second success in two qualifying matches for the 2023 World Cup, doing even better than last Friday, when the coach had complained little malice in front of goal. This time Italy won, convinced and scored five goals, against an opponent – Croatia – however anything but irresistible.

Even for the match against the Croatians, played on a field that is anything but perfect, Bertolini deployed the three-way defense with Gama, Linari and Bartoli. The novelty, however, was Cernoia between the lines, with Bonansea and Bergamaschi wide in the midfield quartet, and the couple Girelli-Giacinti in front. The result was unlocked after 16 minutes: Cernoia hit the crossbar with a free kick, the ball bounced off the line, Croatia failed to remove the ball and right winger captain Sara Gama beat the former teammate from the edge Doris Bacic, deputy of the blue goalkeeper Giuliani at Juventus. At 31 ‘the doubling of Giacinti on a left cross from Caruso, on a left action initiated by Bergamaschi. Before the interval, a thrill for Gama, victim of a very hard intervention by Jelencic: unnatural twist of the ankle, fortunately the Juventus defender gets up, but he will go out at the interval (inside Lenzini).

At the start of the second half, Italy closed the accounts. After two minutes, Galli recovered the ball in midfield and launched Bonansea: devastating action by Juventus and assist only to be pushed into the net for Giacinti. At 50 ‘the poker of Cristiana Girelli, with a right-footed volley from a free kick by Caruso. Bertolini replaced Girelli and Bergamaschi with Cantore and Boattin then, after the electric blackout (and without Rai direct), the teams returned to the field when it was already past 20. Italy remained in 10 for the expulsion of Giuliani ( hand ball outside the area), with Giacinti who gave way to the second goalkeeper Durante, but Cernoia converted shortly after the 5-0 penalty. Article 20 of the regulation, in case of postponement or interruption, would have foreseen the conclusion of the match for tomorrow. Fortunately, Italy avoided the hassle.
