The last pair of North Korean ballistic missiles were fired from a train that came out of a tunnel under a mountain. On Wednesday the launch of the bombs had been detected by the Japanese defense, which had not, however, noticed (or reported) the convoy. This morning the newspaper «Rodong Sinmun» in Pyongyang posted a series of photos on the test. According to North Korean propaganda it was the first fire test of the new one “Rail Mobile Missile Regiment”, established “to inflict severe blows on the forces that threaten the homeland, dispersing our potential in the territory”.
North Korea has already shown and used mobile launchers, mounted on large wheeled vehicles, but it is the first time that it uses a train for its missile tests. According to Ankit Panda, Carnegie Endowment scholar, ““ Rail missile artillery is no better than mobile roadside artillery, but it creates another headache for South Korean and American defense planners. Ready-to-launch solid fuel missiles can emerge from a railway tunnel and be launched, even if the point is known. ‘
In the last few years Kim Jong-un ordered its military to develop a mix of missile launch capabilities to make its deterrent more formidable. The two missiles launched from a train yesterday landed in Sea of Japan, after flying 800 kilometers. South Korea is also accelerating the arms race. On Wednesday, a few hours after the northern test, the South Koreans tried a ballistic missile launched from a submarine for the first time. Kim Yo Jong, sister of the Marshal of Pyongyang, he responded by threatening the “complete destruction” of bilateral relations with Seoul.
