Italy continues its ride to the Europeans 2021 of men’s volleyball. Our national team overwhelmed Germany with a resounding 3-0 in a one-way match, got their seventh consecutive victory and that’s how it was. qualified for the semifinals of the continental review. The Azzurri are back among the big four of the Old Continent, six years after the last time (bronze in 2015), and Saturday 18 September (5.30 pm) they will take the field to face Serbia in Katowice (Poland). The boys of the CT Fefé De Giorgi will have to contend with the European Champions in a really creepy clash that promises to be decidedly difficult, among other things two weeks after the triumph of the blue against the slaves in the final act of the women’s Europeans.
Italy presents itself to the appointment as unbeaten, with the clear affirmations on Bulgaria, Slovenia and Germany to stand out among the seven seals. Serbia, on the other hand, lost the direct clash with Poland in the group stage, then only survived the tie-break against Turkey in the round of 16 (comeback 1-2) and got rid of Holland 3-0 (but the partials were definitely pulled). The sextet of coach Boban Kovac seems to be able to start with the favors of the prediction, but this renewed national team has all the credentials to play it and to dream big: as we have seen in the last ten days, the Azzurri know how to attack in a precise manner , they can rely on an excellent wall-defense mechanism, have a good serve on their side and are led by a truly luxurious setter.
Simone Giannelli and his companions will have to deal with great stars of international volleyball. The strong points are the hitter Uros Kovacevic (a career in Italy between Modena, Verona and Trento, from 2012 to 2020), the power plants Marko Podrascanin (now in Trento after passing through Lube and Perugia) e Srecko Lisinac (fresh from the adventure in Trento), but above all the opposite Aleksandar Atanasijevic. The former Perugia striker, however, did not play against the Netherlands and Drazen Luburic was preferred, who distinguished himself: will it be a run-off in view of the semifinal? The setter is the discreet Nikola Jovovic, the free is the not flawless Neven Majstorovic.
The other semi-final will see Poland as the big favorite on the eve. The World Champions and hosts will face the winner of the match between the Czech Republic and Slovenia. The battleship led by the opposite Bartosz Kurek and the hitter Wilfredo Leon wants the final at all costs in front of their audience, but they will have to pay the utmost attention to who they will face: Slovenia has played two continental finals in the last three editions and can rely on big names like Toncek Stern, Klemen Cebulj, Tine Urnaut; the Czech Republic has just returned from the feat against France and does not want to stop.
