The Giro d’Italia 2021 moves away for Vincenzo Nibali. The 36-year-old Sicilian rider of Trek Segafredo this morning fell during a training session on the roads around Lugano, where he resides, and suffered a fracture of the radius of his right arm. Tomorrow he will be operated on his injured limb, but at this point his participation in the next Giro d’Italia (via Saturday 8 May from Turin) appears strongly in doubt.
Nibali had returned only two days ago from a high-altitude training retreat in Tenerife, on the slopes of the Teide volcano, and was preparing on the roads home – the Sicilian resides in Lugano, Switzerland – in view of the next race that should have been the Tour of the Alps, scheduled from 19 to 23 April.
After the race in Trentino, the rider of the Trek Segafredo team should have run the Liège-Bastogne-Liège in Belgium on Sunday 25 April, then take part in the Giro d’Italia. However, everything will have to be reviewed in light of this serious injury and the outcome of the operation scheduled for tomorrow in Lugano. It should be remembered that the highlight of the season for Nibali was to be the online test of the Tokyo Olympics.
This is the statement issued by his team Trek Segafredo: “This morning Vincenzo Nibali fell alone while training near Ponte Tresa, in the province of Lugano, suffering a blow to his right hand. Medical examinations, radiography and CT scan, at a clinic in Lugano unfortunately revealed a compound fracture of the radius of the right wrist. The Trek-Segafredo medical staff, in agreement with the Team Management and Vincenzo, decided to opt for immediate osteosynthesis to reduce the fracture, scheduled for tomorrow in Switzerland. Only after the intervention will it be possible to hypothesize a recovery path and make the necessary assessments on Nibali’s participation in the Giro d’Italia ”.
