Tuesday 14 September at 20.00 on Costanzi Theater reopens to the public with “Notre Dame of Paris”, ballet in two acts from the novel of the same name by Victor hugo, a masterpiece by one of the greatest exponents of the modern repertoire, Roland Petit, who signs libretto and choreography.
Al Costanzi it only went on stage in 1984 with the Ballet National from Marseille. Luigi Bonino, Artistic Director of the Roland Petit Repertoire, takes it up again for the first time with Corps de Ballet of the Opera House of Rome, directed by Eleonora Abbagnato. Exceptional guests Aigerim Beketayeva e Bakhtiyar Adamzhan (14, 16 and 18 September), both Principal Dancer dell’Astana Opera. The staging of the Opéra National de Bordeaux and Opéra de Paris is that of the 1965 premiere, with the original costumes created by the great couturier Yves Saint Laurent and the sober but monumental scenes of René Allio. The lights are of Jean-Michel Desire. “Notre Dame of Paris” was the first creation of Roland Petit for theOpéra from Paris, an undisputed success since its debut. Small he was the protagonist, the very first interpreter of the role of Quasimodo. In 1965 on the stage of Palace garnish expressed the deformity of this character through dance. With him the famous bell ringer of the cathedral of Our Lady he loses his hump to turn into a tender and introverted boy, complexed because he has suffered an injury. He and the other two protagonists, Esmeralda e Frollo, are people rejected by society because they are different: in this theme lies the ingenious modernization work of the French choreographer and the dramatic relevance of this ballet. “Tell a great and beautiful story – said Petit of his Notre-Dame de Paris. I have deliberately removed the anecdote and pantomime from it: I hope that the Middle Ages will vanish like Viollet-le-Duc and that, for the viewer, only the tragic tension of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece remains ”.
