New generation, same formula based on fun and performance. This is how the new Subaru WRX now in its fifth reincarnation in over 20 years of history.
The Japanese sedan that boasts an illustrious past in the world of rallying returns with many innovations, especially in terms of mechanics and technology.
Exteriors (almost confirmed), renewed interiors
The design of the new Subaru WRX, in fact, has not been revolutionized. The shapes remain those of a sports sedan with the addition of a voluminous one kit widebody which makes the whole even more aggressive. Among the highlights of the WRX we find the hexagonal grille with sharp edges LED headlights and a series of anthracite-colored protections in contrast with the bodywork that debuts in the new orange color.
Even if the characteristic wing is missing (present only on the STI variant which could be seen in a few months), there are new aerodynamic appendages on the wheel arches to improve airflow and stability at high speeds. Confirmed, however, the large air intake on the hood that gives “breath” to the engine.
More innovations are found in the passenger compartment which has been completely redesigned. The dashboard houses the infotainment system Starlink Multimedia Plus with schermo touch in full HD da 11,6”. In fact, it is a real command center through which to manage car settings, air conditioning, navigation and multimedia.
The icons on the screen can be dragged as on a smartphone to arrange them in an intuitive and immediate way and the system can be combined with an audio system Harman Kardon from 11 speakers. The GreenEdge and Clari-Fi technologies of this optional system allow for clean, high-quality sound.
Speed and precision
The new Subaru WRX can count on a new 275 HP 2.4 turbo Boxer (+3 HP compared to the previous model) and 350 Nm of torque. According to Subaru, the upgrades to the turbo and the presence of bypass valves have improved responsiveness and acceleration.
In combination there is always the four-wheel drive with the addition of Active Torque Vectoring and you can choose whether to equip a 6-speed manual gearbox or the new Subaru Performance Transmission automatic gearbox.
Automatic transmission allows change up to 50% faster than the previous unit and is equipped with the function of Rev Matching. The response of the gearbox and engine can be adjusted through the SI-Drive Performance Management Involvement modes.
The set-up has been refined thanks to the Subaru Global Platform which has increased torsional stiffness by 28% and has allowed the adoption of new suspension with higher excursion to improve stability on rough terrain.
In terms of safety, the Subaru is equipped with seven standard airbags and the package EyeSight Driver Assist (available with automatic transmission). The latter includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with lane keeping and Automatic Emergency Steering. It works “in tandem” with the Pre-Collision Braking System improving emergency steering to avoid an obstacle or an accident at less than 100 km / h.
The new WRX makes its debuttop of the GT range which includes electronically controlled shock absorbers and new additional driving modes for a total of 430 customization options. Exclusively for the GT there are also the Recaro seats electrically adjustable, 18 ”dark gray rims on 245/40 tires and all driver assistance systems, including EyeSight Driver Assist and adaptive cruise control.
In the United States, the Subaru WRX will arrive in the first months of 2022. The landing in Italy and the relative price list has not yet been announced.
