After 11 days of work that involved about 400 civil volunteers, in addition to professional rescuers, the searches of Federico Lugato, the 39-year-old Venetian resident in Milan for years, who disappeared on August 26 in Val Zoldana, in the Belluno area, were officially suspended.
The decision was taken at the end of a meeting in the Prefecture in Belluno between the research unit and the police: “We are close to the Lugato family, which unfortunately still lives in the anguish of the absence of news” he wrote on Facebook the mayor of Val di Zoldo Camillo De Pellegrin, assuring however that “the searches will be resumed immediately if new elements emerge”.
The efforts of the Fire Brigade are thus interrupted for the moment, after the stop to the activity of the volunteers who flocked to the Belluno area from all over northern Italy after the appeals launched on the web by Elena Panciera, the wife of Federico Lugato.
It was she who announced it, in a live Instagram “particularly difficult, after 11 crazy days in which monstrous resources were used by everyone”, as she herself defined it: “Everyone has done everything, so there is stop, because this is not a job that is done only with the head, but also with the heart – he said – It is useless to go around it: it is reasonable to think that Federico at this point is no longer alive and I have to start dealing with the fact that maybe I might never find it ”.
If she rationally reached this awareness, however, the woman reiterated that “it is essential for me to find it and therefore I will continue to do everything to get some answers. I need it and I have met people who have assured me that they will help me find them ”.
In addition to the obvious and understandable despair, in the message entrusted by Elena Panciera to the social networks there is also a lot of gratitude “for the crazy people I have met in these absurd days. I am referring to those who arrived here in the valley not knowing Federico and me, driven solely by a moral imperative and the urgency to help others. Here, for me those are truly exceptional people – he stressed – Doing everything for those you love is normal, but doing it for those you don’t know represents true humanity in my opinion. Covid has not made everyone worse, on the contrary. These days I’ve hugged all the people I haven’t hugged in the last
year and a half. Thanks to everyone and everyone, humans and dogs, but also to technology. It is an important tool and we have used it well “
