A total of 447 Loggerhead turtles took off in the Region

It was obvious that 2021 was the year of records. But there are not only those celebrated by the blue stars.

Even if the color in question still has something in common with the record that, this season, it has recorded in the Lazio coast. It is the color of the sea, a goal already achieved by 447 baby turtles.

The grand finale

The last born, of which we have news, date back to Sunday 5 September. “Grand finale for the Castelporziano nest station where, from the Ostia 2 nest, another 10 lively little ones came out and ready to take to the sea”, the Lazio Region said “In total, from the three nests transferred to the Presidential Estate were born as many as 197 baby turtles that are added to those of Terracina and Sabaudia for a total, still provisional, of 447 small ones that reach the sea ”.

A third more nests than in 2020

The number of nests this year had already registered a strong increase. The specimens of Caretta caretta had already reached the coasts of Lazio to create 9 nests. Three more than last season. A reason for satisfaction for the operators of Tartalazio, the researchers and the volunteers who follow with dedication the opening of the many eggs. “And the last nest is still missing, that of Terracina2, for which the birth of the young is expected towards the last week of September”.

The satisfaction of the Region

The birth of the many specimens of Caretta caretta was also greeted with satisfaction by the governor Nicola Zingaretti “It is good news that demonstrates the commitment of the Lazio Region for the conservation and protection of our ecosystem” declared President Zingaretti, before thanking the regional staff and the volunteers of the Tartalazio Network “for years engaged in these activities of safeguarding and protecting the turtles”.
