San Basilio, on the eastern outskirts of Rome, inside the Municipality IV inhabited by 190,000 people, is one of the key districts of the electoral confrontation underway in the capital. Here the outgoing mayor of the M5, Virginia Raggi, opened her electoral campaign. Today the candidate for mayor of Rome for the center-left Roberto Gualtieri visited the market operators and made a tour among the residents, up to the areas of the Erp complexes where degradation reigns among broken pipes, overgrown vegetation and abusive structures.
“I’ve been here for 32 years, raised three children, and nothing has ever changed,” complained one lady. On the walls, the elderly remember that apart from the whale park there are no other meeting places in the neighborhood. At the market the traders raise the problem of the slowness of the municipal offices. A neighborhood that Gualtieri defines as “emblematic. We have this square with the whale park, a setting that has been talked about a lot but all around there is abandonment and decay. It is a neighborhood to which unfulfilled promises have been made, apart from some spot interventions under elections ”.
For Gualtieri, San Basilio must start again from “extending the metro to Casal Monastero, passing through San Basilio. A fundamental intervention. Then there is the problem of the interminable works on the Tiburtina which are now an unworthy thing ”. In addition to mobility, “there are problems with urban decorum and school dropout, two kindergartens have been closed. The quality of life is part of the school “. Finally, the problem of social housing and support for young couples. Gualtieri relaunches the project of a housing agency to encourage purchase and rent with a state contribution to couples. “Yes, but we want to stay in San Basilio”, says a boy. “The list of problems is huge,” Gualtieri points out. “But we will not do the spot interventions like Rays, we are in favor of a profound change in the model of our city”, he concludes.
