Horizon Forbidden West, Sony’s sensational turnaround on the upgrade from PS4 to PS5

The opening of pre-orders for Horizon: Forbidden West it had been, without a doubt, one of the great catchphrases of recent days.

The news of the different editions, some of which with physical disc and some without, had come after the formalization of the launch window, which had been unveiled during the Gamescom Opening Night Live.

However, while some players had made themselves heard above all by virtue of the collector’s editions that offered the game in digital only, many others had focused on the fact that – in contrast to what was said a few months ago – Sony hadn’t planned a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5 for buyers of Horizon: Forbidden West.

The standard edition of the game, in fact, did not include the next-gen update: this meant that those who bought the game on PS4 necessarily had to buy it back in case of switching to PS5, unless they took home the 89 edition. € 99 (Special Edition), which included the game for both consoles.

With a note published on PlayStation Blog, Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided to do a sensational turnaround, announcing that he has changed his strategy and that he has also decided how the upgrade will work in the future for Gran Turismo 7 and God of War: Ragnarok.

Horizon: Forbidden West, here’s how the upgrade will work

The note issued by Sony is signed by Jim Ryan, CEO and president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, who in reference to the feedback received from fans writes:

Last year, we made a commitment to guarantee the free update for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon: Forbidden West. Although the impact of the pandemic has pushed Horizon: Forbidden West out of the launch window we originally envisioned, we want to keep our offer.

The players who buy Horizon: Forbidden West on PS4 will have the option to upgrade to PS5 for free.

All PS4 editions of Aloy’s new adventure, therefore, will automatically include the ability to download the game natively for PS5 as well.

This is a total change of course, compared to what had been revealed only a few days ago – which in turn was a total change of course compared to the declarations of a few months earlier.

Horizon: Forbidden West will be released on February 18, 2022

How the upgrade for God of War: Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7 will work

On the same note, Ryan also anticipated having already decided how the upgrade will work for God of War: Ragnarok and for Gran Turismo 7, which we know are the next titles coming, after the new one Horizon, in the PlayStation Studios line-up.

In this case there will be no free upgrade but as we have seen for Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut and as announced for Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, players will be able to buy the upgrade to PS5 for $ 10.

In Ryan’s words:

I also wanted to confirm today that, from now on, PlayStation first-party cross-gen exclusives (debuting on both PS4 and PS5) – both physical and digital – will offer the possibility to upgrade in digital format from PS4 to PS5 for $ 10.

This applies to the God of War next-gen e per Gran Turismo 7, and any other cross-gen exclusives for PS4 and PS5 published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

So if you buy the next one God of War in retail format on PS4, you will have the option of download it digitally on PS5 by paying $ 10. Attention, however, because it is specified that (obviously) in this case you will have to have a PS5 with a blu-ray player, because you will have to insert the game disc to enable the download of the new version.

If, on the other hand, you already buy it from the PlayStation Store on PS4, there will be no asterisks on which edition of the PS5 console you need to have in order to perform the upgrade correctly.

Everything we know about the new God of War

Having clarified this point, in short, it is clear how Sony itself had realized that it had not lived up to expectations and to the affection of its users, who remembered well the promise of the free upgrade made some time ago, especially relating to Horizon: Forbidden West.

We will now see how the news related to will be received God of War: Ragnarok e Gran Turismo 7, which will embrace the model of the recent ones Director’s Cut asking for a paid update, but there will be time to think about it, considering that now above all Aloy is on the horizon.

If you want to start following Aloy on his travels, start with the best Horizon: Zero Dawn.
