Italy won the women’s volleyball European Championship, beating Serbia in the final in Belgrade in 3 sets: 24-26, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-11 the partials in favor of the Italians led by Davide Mazzanti, who at the Tokyo Games they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Serbia.
It is the third continental success for Italy after the titles won in 2007 and 2009.
The taboo of Serbia is broken: the winners of the last two Europeans in recent years had beaten the Italians in the final of the 2018 World Cup, in the semifinal of the 2019 European Championships and a few weeks ago in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
First set of great balance, with the hosts who have imposed themselves only on the advantages. The second was also very hard fought, with Italy ahead at the start (4-1 and then 12-10) and Serbia reaching and overtaking the blue (20-19) before Paola Egonu and her teammates managed to win the sprint . In the third, however, after a start in the sign of our opponents (8-3), Italy took control and closed with ease. The fourth set was a blue catwalk, with devastating attacks and an insuperable wall.
Davide Mazzanti is very happy: “It was a long summer, in which we struggled, but the girls did something extraordinary”, says the Italian volleyball women’s coach to Rai Sport. “It was an incredible effort to go back to the field, to be able to have fun again – he confesses – It was nice to see the girls in these last games having fun and expressing what their talent was. The girls were very good, it is difficult to find the words, it was a very tough time but I am happy for them and for the movement, we needed it ”.
