Webuild has been awarded the 1.26 billion euro contract for the executive design and construction of two sections of the Pedemontana Lombarda motorway. In particular, these are lots B2 (12.7 kilometers from Lentate sul Seveso to Cesano Maderno) and C (20 kilometers from Cesano Maderno to the east ring road of Milan A51). The group led by CEO Pietro Salini is the leader with 70% of a consortium that also includes Pizzarotti at 30%. The new sections – explains a note – will be real “smart roads” and will be innovative also in anticipation of future maintenance. With this new contract, the consolidated value of Webuild’s awards, contracts being finalized and those in which it is the best bidder from the beginning of 2021 to today stands at over 10 billion euros. Added to these is the mega-contract signed for the high-speed line in Texas, worth 16 billion dollars (13.1 billion euros).
The new work, commissioned by Autostrada Pedemontana Lombarda, will have to be completed in view of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics and will have a strategic value for the development of Northern Italy. For its realization, 18,400 jobs will be generated, including related industries, and, once completed, it will act as a driving force for the increase in turnover of local companies estimated at 4.4 billion euros in 10 years. In environmental terms, the project also envisages, as a preparatory activity, the reclamation of the areas still affected by the environmental disaster of Seveso in 1976. The design solution will take into account the need for the roads to also accommodate self-driving vehicles. In fact, the installation on the motorway section of cooperative intelligent transport systems and the use of technologies that will allow vehicles to communicate with the roadside infrastructure are foreseen. In short, a real smart road with innovative features such as the reporting of accidents, construction sites, obstacles on the roadway and vehicles in the wrong direction, or even the dynamic management of road lanes, the repetition on board the vehicle of road signs and speed limits, or even the collection and processing of data on traffic conditions. The project also provides for a continuous diagnostic system of the main load-bearing structures, through the installation of tools for monitoring the main structural stress parameters (deformations, loads, vibrations and temperature), thus reducing the possibility of critical episodes. On the stock market, Webuild, after an upward start, closed unchanged (-0.09%).
