Us Open: Berrettini, Sinner and Seppi chasing the second round

At 5 pm Matteo opens against Ivashka, at 6 pm Andreas against Otte, the Jannik program closes for the match against Monfils. Only 8 times in history Italy has placed a player in the fourth round

It will be a Saturday of fire for Italian tennis, which for the first time in history has qualified three players for the third round of the United States Open. Matteo Berrettini will open the afternoon session on the Grandstand (5pm Italian time) facing the Belarusian Ilya Ivashka, Jannik Sinner will instead close the afternoon session on the Louis Armstrong facing the French Gael Monfils and finally the first match of the day (at 6pm Italian) for Andreas Seppi on the field number 17 against the German Oscar Otte.

Previous

Between Matteo Berrettini and Ilya Ivashka there are two precedents, all in favor of the blue who beat the rival in the Portoroz challenger in 2017 (6-4 6-4) and at Wimbledon last July for 6-4 6-3 6-1 . There are also two precedents between Sinner and Monfils: the South Tyrolean won the first challenge in Antwerp in 2019 (6-3 6-2) and the Frenchman instead beat Sinner in Vienna in 2019 (6-3 7-6). On the other hand, there are no precedents between Seppi and Otte. Only 8 times, in the history of a tournament that saw Italy’s first participation in 1937 (Umberto Cuccioli), Italy managed to qualify a player for the round of 16. It happened for the first time in 1977 with Corrado Barazzutti semifinalist (beaten by Connors), then in 1978 with Adriano Panatta in the second round (still eliminated by Connors), then in 1994 with Gianluca Pozzi in the eighth (overtaken by Karbacher), in 2005 with Davide Sanguinetti in the round of 16 (overtaken by Nalbandian), in 2015 with Fabio Fognini in the round of 16 (eliminated by Feliciano Lopez), in 2017 with Paolo Lorenzi in the round of 16 (overtaken by Kevin Anderson), in 2019 with Matteo Berrettini semifinalist (eliminated by Nadal) and in 2020 again with Matteo Berrettini eliminated in the second round by Andey Rublev. On paper, the three Azzurri have an excellent chance of qualifying for the round of 16. An eighth will come out between Seppi and Berrettini and one between Sinner and, most likely, Alexander Zverev.
