Slovenian Primoz Roglic is about to conquer his third Vuelta di Spagna, at the end of an extraordinary year for him. Roglic won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics 5 weeks ago, but yesterday at the end of the stage he announced that he will not participate in the world time trial, which will be in Belgium in two weeks. Thus, the World Cup in Leuven will not be able to boast the presence of the Olympic medal at its start, while there will be Tom Dumoulin silver in Tokyo and Rohan Dennis bronze.
“I don’t think I’m there,” said the Slovenian hastily at the end of the nineteenth stage. “First I want to finish this race and then I’ll look to the future, but I don’t think I’ll go.” Meanwhile Roglic is enjoying the last days of this Vuelta di Spagna, which tomorrow will end with a time trial in Santiago de Compostela with the Slovenian who will still be the number one favorite.
“I didn’t know that yesterday I would have worn the race leader’s jersey in a great lap for the fiftieth time in my career.” Roglic la Vuelta has already won it twice, and finished third in the 2019 Giro d’Italia and second last year in the Tour de France. The Slovenian is strong and has worn the leader’s jersey in all three great laps and this year he is preparing to win his third consecutive Vuelta. “I never worry too much about the statistics. I love hearing them and they always surprise me in a positive way. We hope that there are still days as leaders for me ». The Slovenian yesterday wore the red jersey for the 34th time. At the Tour de France he raced in yellow for eleven days, and wore the pink jersey of the Giro d’Italia five times.
Regarding yesterday’s leg, Roglic said it was difficult, but it went very well for his team. «From start to finish, the pace was good. For us as a team it was great that a large group went on the run. The Vuelta is slowly coming to an end. The odds are getting smaller, even though many teams are still looking for success. We were satisfied and had no problems ». Today the race in its penultimate before the end, will start from Sanxenxo to get to Mos. Castro de Herville after 202 km.
It will be a difficult race, full of pitfalls and often the great stage races have been decided in the last few days. «Today’s stage will be anything but easy. We will have to keep our attention high also in tomorrow’s individual time trial. We know better than anyone that the heck of a big ride is often in its tail. We will have to stay focused and do our best to bring home the red jersey. We hope to still have enough energy in the tank to seal these three weeks with the desired result ».
