The blues lose 3-2 (21-25, 25-16, 25-27, 25-16, 15-12) the last match of the group, which will close as second or third in the standings
L’Italy of women’s volleyball lost for the second consecutive time in the group of Olympic Games from Tokyo. A painless defeat for the qualification, already acquired, but dangerous for the crossings in the quarterfinals. The 3-2 suffered by United States (21-25, 25-16, 25-27, 25-16, 15-12) does not allow the blue to finish in first place in the group: we will have to wait for the result of Russia-Turkey to understand if they will be second or third.
The round of theItaly of women’s volleyball in the Olympic group of Tokyo. After the surprise knockout against the China, the blue (with the qualification already in their pocket) also lose against United States, surrendering to the tiebreaker in a match in which they appeared several times in difficulty. The partial 21-25, 25-16, 25-27, 25-16, 15-12 explain the American dominance in a large part of the meeting, in which our National suffers a few black outs too. The match starts with a great balance between the two teams. The first extension smiles at Italy, who goes to 13-7 taking advantage of some brilliant team action, with Egonu and Fahr on shields. The Americans return until 19-17, then two points of Paola Egonu in a key moment of the set they allow Italy to stretch, up to reach 24-18 and close on 25-21. The second set begins with the inertia with which the first one ended: the Americans found an immediate extension and soon reached 11-8. The blue suffer in particular the wall of the opponents, attentive and compact. With another good 3-in-a-row, the Americans move to 18-12 and control the second set, which they close with ease 25-16.
The balance returns in the next part, where the teams face each other point by point. A few too many distractions cost Italy dearly at a decisive moment: the US extends up to 20-15. It is at this point that the Italians are able to react, with the fundamental contribution of one Sylla in great dusting. The girls of Mazzanti they return until 22-22 and then cancel two set points: two dunks by Egonu and Sylla close on 27-25. In the fourth set some unforced errors and some inaccuracies in the Italian defense allow the United States to move to 12-9 and dig a groove up to 18-10, which again directs the partial towards the worst scenario for Italy. The wall that carries the definitive 25-16 on the set is the photograph of the offensive difficulties of our national team. The tie-break finds another lightning start for the Americans, who quickly lead to 6-3, forcing Mazzanti to call time out to shake up his players. The blues are unable to score heavy points in their service or complete the comeback: the decisive set slips away with a sad 15-12. Italy, overtaken by the United States, is now waiting for the outcome of Russian-Turkey Olympic Committee to know his placement in the group, which can be second or third. Not a small detail: in the worst case scenario we would face the Serbia to the quarter-finals.
