MILANO – Important employment recovery in June, with the gap with respect to pre-crisis levels which remains very large but is narrowing. In June, Istat said, “the trend of employment growth that began in February 2021 strengthens”: the Institute details that growth is equal to + 166 thousand units (+ 0.7%) compared to the previous month “. A growth that affects young people, women, employees, self-employed and all age groups. In the annual comparison, the number of employees is 1.2% higher than that of June 2020 (+ 267 thousand units). Comparing the second quarter of this year with the previous one, the level of employment is higher by 1.0%, with an increase of 223 thousand units.
The recoveries of the labor market that began in February and continued until June begin to bring Italy back to what it was before the crisis, even if we are still halfway there. “Over the five months there has been an increase of over 400 thousand employees”, says Istat, explaining however that the rise does not involve self-employed workers, who in the same period recorded a decrease of 44 thousand units, despite the recovery of 39 thousand units in the last month. Compared to February 2020, the month prior to the start of the pandemic, the number of employees is still more than 470 thousand units. There were 23.2 million employed at the time, down to 22.2 million last December and now they are 22.7.
The unemployment rate falls, again in June, to 9.7% (-0.5 points) and returns, after five months, to below the 10% threshold. Among young people it stood at 29.4% (-1.3 points). The decrease in the number of job seekers (-5.1% compared to May, equal to -131 thousand units) also affects both gender components and all age groups.
Another timidly positive sign is the fact that between May and June the number of inactive people aged between 15 and 64 also decreased (-0.3%, equal to -34 thousand units); in this case, the decline involves women, children under 24 and over 50-year-olds. The inactivity rate drops to 35.8% (-0.1 points).
