(ANSA) – SAN PAOLO, JUL 28 – Agents of the federal police and the Brazilian revenue agency have carried out an operation against the smuggling of gold, illegally extracted in the northern region of the country, towards Italy.
Named Ruta 79, the operation resulted in four preventive arrest warrants and 21 search and seizure warrants in cities in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais.
Investigators estimate that, from 2017 to 2019, the criminal organization smuggled more than a ton of gold into the Italian territory.
The investigation began with the arrest of a federal police officer who, according to investigators, was part of the gang and was responsible for the illegal passage of contraband gold from the public area to the restricted area of the airports.
The investigation led to the seizure of over 17 kg of gold and jewelry, all worth over a million dollars.
According to the police, the suspects used people as “mules” to transport the gold to Italy.
The illegally transported cargo contained false documents from companies based in Paraguay. (HANDLE).
