Over 100km wide and with an uncertain composition, this celestial body is moving towards our reference star. While another asteroid could come close to our planet
It is called 2014 UN271, it is about 600 thousand years old, a width that has been estimated between 100 and 200 km and has a composition still partially unknown to scientists. This asteroid is speeding towards the sun and is currently at a safe distance from Earth, that is, three billion km, within the orbit of Neptune. Its size, however, is such as to make it visible to the naked eye even from the Earth, as CNN explains, that in 2031 the asteroid could be immortalized by an amateur telescope.
The discovery only in June
This asteroid was discovered by two professors from the University of Pennsylvania, Bernardinelli-Bernstein only in June of this year and one of the most distant celestial bodies from our planet, a feature that makes it perfect to be studied for many years to come. Surely it will not be for a danger to the Earth, as another asteroid could turn out to be it will pass only 7.5 million km from our planet. It is called 2019 YM6, has about 140 m in diameter and is constantly monitored by NASA to understand what its movements will be.
Just a few days ago another sighting in Oslo
In recent days, still talking about celestial bodies that come into contact with our planet, in Norway a meteorite crashed near Oslo, causing concern for citizens who saw a fireball (video here). Many calls came to the police also due to the pressure that would also have opened the windows in the city. Fortunately, no damage to property or people was found. The asteroid fell in a wooded area about 60km from the capital but the reports of its sighting even reached Scotland.
