BERN – 362 infections, 78 hospitalizations and 18 deaths despite the two doses of the vaccine. This is the report published yesterday by the FOPH on the epidemiological trend among “immunized” people since the beginning of the vaccination campaign. A look at the distribution by age shows that, as with the unvaccinated, the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths also increases with age. Of the 18 reported deaths, 17 were over 80, while one was a man between 50 and 59 years old.
Almost only elderly: two explanations – According to Jürg Utzinger, director of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), there are two explanations: “First, vaccine protection is known to be less effective for older people and / or people with previous illnesses. Secondly, it decreases over time ». Since older people were vaccinated first, vaccination protection is likely to have decreased more. The figures show that infections among vaccinated young people also exist, but they are less common.
Excellent protection – Jürg Utzinger is far from surprised by these numbers. According to his calculations, about 93% of hospitalizations and deaths were avoided thanks to vaccination. “Even if this percentage is to be taken with a grain of salt – some hypotheses should be verified – we can clearly state: the mRNA vaccines used in Switzerland provide excellent protection against coronavirus infection and especially against severe disease courses”.
100%: no one ever said – Manfred Kopf, member of the federal task force and immunologist at ETH Zurich, also has a clear opinion: “No one ever said that a vaccination offers 100% protection. But 300 infections and 18 deaths for almost four million vaccinations carried out are still less than expected “. For Kopf it is clear: “Without the vaccination campaign, due to the Delta variant, we would soon have had more daily hospitalizations than at the peak of the second wave and a thousand more coronavirus deaths”. Furthermore, the fact that the absolute number of infections among vaccinated people increases with the increase in the vaccination rate was “sure as an amen in church,” he adds.
Acceptable Side Effects – The immunologist, interviewed by 20 Minuten, continues his explanation: “Depending on the age and any previous illnesses, the risk of ending up in hospital due to Covid-19 or even dying from it is 20 to 30 times inferior”. On the other hand, there is a risk of having side effects, including fever or chills, for one or two days. “It is frustrating to see that so few people agree to be vaccinated. I don’t know any serious expert who wouldn’t recommend vaccination. ‘
Young people: recommended vaccination – This is not only true for people at risk: «Even if the risk of dying from coronavirus is negligible for a healthy 20-year-old, there are good reasons for vaccination: on the one hand, Long Covid, which can cause difficulties for months. And on the other hand, the awareness that we can get out of this pandemic and revoke all measures only if we have reached a sufficiently high vaccination rate ».
Originally, it was assumed that around 65% of vaccinated people would be sufficient for this. “Due to the new, more contagious variants, this number has been corrected to around 85%,” Kopf concludes. Those who do not want to be vaccinated need to keep in mind that they are helping to prolong the pandemic.
