Green pass, is it possible to fake it?

From 6 August the certificate will be mandatory to sit at indoor tables in bars and restaurants and access sporting events, shows, cinemas, theaters, gyms, swimming pools, fairs and conferences. On some chats, groups have sprung up that promise the Green pass within 48 or 72 hours of the request, without having to vaccinate or undergo a tampon. But is it possible to create a fake certificate? Fortunately, it is not easy, while it is much more easy to fall victim to a scam

From 6 August the Green pass will be mandatory to sit at indoor tables in bars and restaurants and access sporting events, shows, cinemas, theaters, gyms, swimming pools, fairs and conferences. The announcement of the measure by Prime Minister Draghi had a double effect: on the one hand, a boom in bookings among those who have not yet received at least a dose of Covid-19 vaccine, on the other, the protests of those who do not intend receive it and speaks of “health dictatorship” and “violation of constitutional freedoms”. And, not far from the approval of the new Covid decree, where the rule that extends the mandatory nature of the Green pass is inserted, groups appear online, or on Telegram chats, where it is promised to make alleged green certificates available within 48 or 72 hours from the request, without having to vaccinate or undergo a swab. But is it possible to fake a Green pass?

The Green pass works through the QR code, a tool already widespread for airline tickets, tickets to attend shows and to be able to read digital menus in restaurants. It is a technology that, with a camera and an internet connection, immediately transfers certain information that you want to share, from the list of dishes in a restaurant to the vaccination against Covid-19. The QR code is used to transfer the requested information by encoding it into an image that can be decoded by a special software. In principle, according to Riccardo Meggiato – cyber-security consultant, journalist and writer expert in forensic analysis on electronic devices, software and telephony – “the QR code is a vulnerable system. It is not easy to fake it, but it is possible. This applies to both those in the restaurants and those of the Green Pass, which do not have many more security guarantees than the others “.

On a Telegram group that claims to sell Green passes identical to the originals, without having to respect the health rules to obtain them, there is a tariff for various cases. A digital certificate for a single person costs € 100, a paper one costs € 120. According to Meggiato, there are two possibilities: “It can be a scam and that’s it, in the sense that fake Green passes are produced and sold. If, on the other hand, the certificates were original, it would be a problem, because it would mean that the creators of the group have a decoding system ”.

Green Pass, the app for checks and penalties arrives: how it works

The creators of the Telegram chat, Meggiato explains to Sky TG24, “say they produce the Green pass on the basis of the documents they are provided with. In the coding system that precedes the issue of the Green pass, a digital signature is also required. The QR code, in essence, renders the information we give it in graphic form. For the Green pass: name, surname, date of birth, if I had the vaccine or not, when I received it, which drug was administered and the digital signature “. Meggiato continues: “To generate a digital signature you need systems such as SPID (HOW IT WORKS) or similar data. So either the creators of the group have a system to generate digital signatures or it’s a big fake. The sending of an identity card and health card is required, probably to give credibility to the project and to convince those concerned that, by sending those data, the Green pass will work “.

The maxi scam hypothesis

An element that, according to Meggiato, indicates that the project is completely false is that of the short time needed to receive the alleged Green Pass. “They say it’s available between 48 and 72 hours. The timing is compatible with those of a maxi scam. If out of thousands of interested people, even just a thousand send requests – assuming that each Green pass is paid 100 euros – they have already earned 10 thousand euros. Enough to disappear into thin air and close the practice there ”.
