The obligation of the Green pass extended up to the age of 12 does not allow many parents to sleep peacefully. Doubts about the usefulness of vaccines for kids and children remain many, especially since Covid data for the little ones are not (yet) alarming. “Injections to babies are effective and safe. Side effects? Inevitable, but very rare.” To say it is the president of the Fimp (Italian Federation of pediatricians), the 66-year-old Paolo Biasci, in service in Livorno. “As for adults, there are more benefits than risks in vaccinating children and teenagers – continues Biasci -. Immunization is necessary to decrease the spread of the virus: this applies to all pediatric ages. The obligation of the extended Green pass up to 12 years old it does not let many parents sleep peacefully. Doubts about the usefulness ofvaccines for kids and children there are many, especially since the Covid data for the little ones are not (yet) alarming. “Injections to babies are effective and safe. Side effects? Inevitable, but very rare.” This is said by the 66-year-old president of the Fimp (Italian Federation of pediatricians) Paolo Biasci, in service in Livorno. “As for adults, there are more benefits than risks in vaccinating children and teenagers – continues Biasci -. Immunization is necessary to decrease the spread of the virus: this applies to all pediatric ages. Children and young people represent an important slice of the population and if we want to avoid the risks of the arrival of new variants that could cause serious complications for the little ones, we must hurry “.

The last piece of the maxi vaccination campaign in Italy it is the approval of the antidotes to Covid-19 for the under 12s. This despite the fact that the data collected to date on the disease of the under 19s are comforting and do not cause concern even in the experts and technicians in the field. Even if – the pediatricians analyze – “in recent days there has been a growth of symptomatic cases even among children”. From March 2020 to last June, in fact, the cases of Covid among the under 19 did not reach 3%, while in the last 30 days alone they stood at 24.3%. This growth in spread, for now, does not coincide with a greater aggressiveness of the disease. Also in the last month from 2 to 6 years, 80% asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic positives were, while 20% was made up of cases with mild symptoms. Virtually unchanged situation in cases of positivity from 7 to 19 years (50% asymptomatic, 25% paucisymptomatic, 25% with mild symptoms). Even the lethality of Covid stands, in the age group 0-19, on numbers very close to zero. To date, 12 children have died between the ages of 0-9 (5.5% positive cases), 16 victims have been reported between 10 and 19 (9.7% of infections). In total, the deaths with Covid among the under 19 were 28 out of almost 130 thousand victims in Italy (4 under 3 years, 4 between 3-5 years, 5 between 6-10 years, 7 between 11-13 years and 8 between 14-19 years).

The green light of the China – the only country that has accelerated so extreme – the Sinovac vaccine for children and young people aged 3 to 17 arrived in June, a week after Israel’s report on cases of myocarditis in very young people who have been immunized (257 out of 5 millions of protected children) and fueled the many questions about whether or not to vaccinate children. The data on the effects of vaccinations for young people they are relatively few, since the trials have only been conducted on adults. In addition, for now in the world, very few young people have had the vaccine. There is a complete lack of data on children aged 3 to 12. “There is no need to fear, surveillance will remain high – explains the president Fimp -. Complications from Covid also exist for the youngest, with multisystemic inflammatory syndromes even after the acute phase. It is necessary to protect everyone, hoping to see the number of 12-19 year-olds who get vaccinated also increase (now we are at 27% with one dose and at 12% who have completed the cycle, ed). A problem to accelerate the vaccination of children could be represented by the No Vax parents, but with the help of us pediatricians it can be overcome easily. Now it’s up to the Regions to give us the green light, because up to now only in a few territories – Liguria, Veneto, Calabria and from 10 August in Tuscany – we left. We still need a certain date to get involved and start the car, we are ready “.

The foreign panorama, with the Chinese case in the background, on vaccines for children remains varied. There are realities, such as the unsuspected Germany, who are already turning up their noses. Jörg Dötsch, president of the German Society of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ) made it clear: “Herd immunity cannot be a criterion, the little ones cannot be forced to protect adults. Germany is not a cause for concern: throughout the pandemic 4 children and adolescents have died from Covid-19. Children are less likely to be infected and less likely to infect others “.
