CREMONA – Today there are two Covid patients admitted to the Maggiore hospital, an apparently comforting situation, but which must be seen in perspective: at this rate, the increase in infections will turn into a growth in the number of hospitalized at the end of August and in a higher probability of deaths among those over 60 who are not vaccinated. To explain it is Sophie Testa, director of the Analysis Laboratory and of the Department of Radiological and Laboratory Medicine of the ASST of Cremona. The incidence of new infections in the province of Cremona has in fact tripled in 21 days passing from 11.1 per hundred thousand inhabitants to 33.9 last week. And also in the Cremona Asst area there is a slight increase in positivity, but progressive for about 15 days. An increase that led to an increase in tampons.
“Currently – explains Testa – we carry out between 400 and 500 tampons a day, 80 every hour, about 100 more than 15 days ago. Among these, there are the routine ones and about 2 or 300 are instead required due to a suspected contagion: the positivity rate has gone from 2 or 3% two weeks ago to 8/10%, even if it must be said that this number includes the rechecks on the already positive ones“. Numbers still far from the 1,700 tests per day carried out in the most critical moments of the epidemic, but which highlight a change in the scenario: “It was expected and – explains Testa – we are not surprised, given the general situation between variants and the mobility resumed without particular protections . At this rate, the increase in infections will turn into an increase in hospitalized at the end of August and a greater probability of deaths in the unvaccinated over 60 population. In fact, we consider that vaccination is 94% effective in preventing ICU admission or death».
