Taken from the third square of the starting grid, Valtteri Bottas decided to use the Soft tire to take advantage of the initial momentum and greater grip with the aim of trying to snatch the second position of the Silverstone Sprint Qualifying from Max Verstappen. The goal remained only potential, because the Finn saw the Dutch rival pass at the head of the first corner, taking advantage of an imperfect start by Lewis Hamilton. So Bottas’ 100km race was pitted in a long train in which he was spaced from his teammate and with a safety advantage over fourth Leclerc. No problem for the duration of the softer tires and third position at the finish line for a new start from the second row in this afternoon’s classic race. For Bottas the satisfaction of a world championship point and a lap on the celebratory truck at the end of the race.
Verstappen: “Nice fight with Lewis”
Valtteri Bottas (3 °, Mercedes): “Today we tried something different, trusting that most of the pilots started with the Middle Schools. I wanted to take advantage of the first lap and the first corners but it did not work. But the risk was minimal and so I kept third place. I felt a bit stuck in the first corners and so I lost the good momentum I had from the start at Turn 1. Clearly we are part of a team and the last thing we want is contact and for sure with your teammate you run a little differently, you have more respect and you don’t want to ruin things. On the tires I suffered a bit from overheating between the third and the tenth-eleventh lap, and it was manageable again at the end. I enjoyed Friday from this format, I really like qualifying“.
