Following the publication on social networks of a video that portrays Antoine Griezmann while mocking some Asian people, Konami’s upper echelons unilaterally decide to terminate Griezmann’s contract as Yu-Gi-Oh! signed a few weeks ago.
In the video in question, taken secretly in 2019 in a hotel in Japan where the Barcelona players stayed during the Asian tour of the Spanish club, you can hear a controversial exchange of racist jokes between Griezmann himself and his teammate Ousmane Dembele.
The crime featured Griezmann and Dembele as they witnessed the intervention of technicians called, apparently, to repair the TV in the hotel room. In the video you can hear the voices of the two Barcelona players while the technicians mock for theirs “strange faces called just to let us play PES”, with further irreverent expressions on the language of the hotel operators and on what “it should have been a developed country”, referring to the technological level of Japan.
The media echo generated by this leaked video thus pushes Konami to distance itself from the incident and issue a press release in which it states that “Konami Digital Entertainment believes, as the philosophy of sport dictates, that discrimination is unacceptable, in whatever form it takes. We previously announced that Antoine Griezmann would be our Yu-Gi-Oh! Content Ambassador, but in light recent events we have decided to terminate the contract“.
The incident could also have repercussions on the partnership between Konami and Barcelona for PES games, as the Japanese company itself suggests specifying in the press release that “We will ask FC Barcelona, as an official partner, to explain the details of what happened and what actions they intend to take”.
