Pope francesco ha “reacted well“To the surgery he underwent on Sunday at Gemelli Polyclinic From Rome. This was announced by a note from the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni. It was a scheduled operation for “diverticular stenosis of the sigma”. The Holy Father was hospitalized in the afternoon, after the recitation of theAngelus. According to agency sources Ansa the hospitalization could last 5 days, also because an observation period will now begin. As the note from the Vatican press office explains, the intervention was conducted by professor Sergio Alfieri, with the assistance of Professor Luigi Sofa, of Dr. Antonio Tortorelli and the doctor RobertaMenghi. “The anesthesia was conducted by Professor Maximum Antonelli, by the teacher Liliana Sollazzi and by the doctors Roberto De Cicco e Maurizio Soave. Professor was also present in the operating room Giovanni Battista Doglietto and professor Roberto Bernabei“. The pontiff had arrived around one in an “anonymous” form, aboard a small sedan and an entourage reduced to a minimum, no more than two people.
Before going to Gemelli, renamed “Vatican III” by St. John Paul II for his long and frequent hospitalizations during the 27 years of his pontificate, Bergoglio appeared in excellent shape. As every Sunday, in fact, at noon the Pope appeared from the window of the Apostolic Palace for the recitation of the Angelus with the numerous faithful present in St. Peter’s Square.
Perhaps also in view of the surgery to which he underwent immediately after, Bergoglio announced that on 12 September he will be in Budapest, on the occasion of the final mass of the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress, and then from there until the 15th he will travel to Slovakia, visiting the cities of Bratislava, Prešov, Košice and Šaštin. A sign of tranquility to avoid alarming the faithful. The intervention to which the Pope was subjected arrives at the beginning of July, the month that has always been reserved for the summer rest of the Popes with the suspension of all audiences, both private and general on Wednesday. The only commitment foreseen on the agenda, besides the Sunday Angelus, is the mass on 25 July, in the Vatican Basilica, for the First World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly established by Bergoglio.
It is the first time that Francesco goes to Gemelli. On June 27, 2014 the visit that the Pope should have made to the university hospital to celebrate mass with the sick and their families was canceled at the last minute due to an unexpected indisposition. Never before, since he was bishop of Rome, had Bergoglio been subjected to surgery, although several times in these eight years of his pontificate rumors, always found to be unfounded, on his poor health and on any operations he would have to undergo.
Recently Francesco talked about his physical condition with the Argentine journalist Nelson Castro. In the interview, Bergoglio recalled when, in 1957, at the age of 21, he underwent the removal of the upper lobe of his right lung due to three cysts. “When I recovered from anesthesia – the Pope said – the pain I felt was very intense. It’s not that I wasn’t worried, but I always had the belief that I would be cured ”. And again: “I have never felt any limitation in my activities”. Even in the various international trips “I never had to limit or cancel” anything from the program. “I have never experienced fatigue or shortness of breath (dyspnea). As the doctors explained to me, the right lung expanded and covered the entire ipsilateral hemithorax ”. The reporter also asked him: “Do you think about death?”. “Yes”, the Pope replied. “Are you afraid?”, The reporter pressed. “No. Not at all ”, Bergoglio replied. “How do you imagine his death?” He asked him then Castro. “As Pope, – was Francis’ reply – in office or emeritus. And here, in Rome. I’m not going back to Argentina ”.
Meanwhile, there are numerous messages of solidarity that are arriving for the Pope. “Your Holiness, – wrote the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, – landed in Paris for the state visit that I am about to begin in nearby and friend France, I learned of his hospitalization at the Gemelli Polyclinic. The affectionate thought of all Italians, of which I am the interpreter by joining my staff, accompanies Your Holiness in these hours, together with the most cordial wishes for a good convalescence and even better and speedy recovery”.
