Mourinho on the Rome transfer market

Preparation begins, a period in which you begin to shape the team according to your wishes. What are the main aspects that you will try to cure?
First, I’ll wait for some gifts to arrive. I hope that the property and Tiago Pinto will give me some gifts, because I would be happy. It would be an extra stimulus for me. And it would give me more potential to develop, with which to start the process.
But, regardless of this, our preparation will be divided into several phases. Players will arrive a little at a time. Those who played in the Europeans will obviously arrive later. They will arrive at different times, depending on how far their respective national teams progress in the tournament. It will be a great time for me to get to know the younger players. Because we will start the preparation with several players joined the team. Clearly, some of them have played a few games and had a few minutes in the last few games of the season. For me it was useful to get to know them better in a context that is certainly different from that of the Primavera. I want to see how they behave, I want to create a relationship with them. I want there to be collaboration with the youth sector. Because there is nothing better for a coach than bringing some young players to the first team. Players who have absorbed the club culture. I hope it will happen more and more often in the future. But let’s do one thing at a time. All the games that we will play during the preparation will serve to make us grow. We will start having each player play for 45 minutes. We will not look at the result of the match. We will play against stronger teams and teams that are a step or two ahead of us because they started training before us and therefore are in a different stage of preparation. We will develop the team one step at a time. I will take a small group of people with me. I’m not the type of manager who invades a club with a lot of collaborators. I think it is not right. I think that those who work in the club should have the opportunity to prove their worth. To demonstrate the sense of belonging to the club and the ability to adapt to a new manager and a new course. So, we try, all together, to create, and this is the most important thing, a team. And when I say a team, I don’t just mean the 11 players who take to the pitch. I mean the club has to be a team. Everyone must feel part of the team. Everyone has to think: “I want to give my all for my team.” Everyone must be happy when a good result is obtained and sad when the result is negative. But everyone must feel part of a team.

Was it those human sensations you refer to that convinced you that this was the right opportunity at the right time?
It was the human sensations, but also the ideas, information, questions and answers from both sides. After the first interview I had the feeling that this is not the Friekdin, Mourinho or Tiago Pinto project, but the AS Roma project, this is what I thought. I know the reality of the facts. We finished 29 points behind the leaders and 16 points from fourth place. But a club is not judged from last season, a club is judged from a broader point of view, I know very well what AS Roma is. I know the fans, I know the passion, that of Roma is a project with which the property intends to leave a legacy for the years to come, it intends to do something important for the club, to work on a project that is sustainable. He wants to create the foundation for success. I hope this can come while I am here, because the contract I signed is a three year contract. Maybe it will be only the first contract, maybe one day I will sign a second. I hope the results of our work can be seen while I am here, I really want this to happen. But let’s go through one thing at a time. I am very happy to be part of this project, that of AS Roma. We want to create a winning Rome, but also a winning future. We don’t want success to be an isolated moment. A moment that everyone will enjoy, but we want there to be positive consequences. We want to create something that lasts over time, as the owners want, to guarantee the club itself a successful future. We do it for the club, for the fans, for the future and I’m ready. I am excited, I want to accelerate this process. This is why I say that I hope we will be able to see results before the end of my contact. It is not in my nature to wait too long before reaping the rewards. I want to speed up the process. And I hope that all together we can get results as soon as possible.

There is great excitement in Italy for your return, more than 10 years have passed since the last one. Do you think you’ve changed as a manager since that time?
I have improved a lot. I’m serious, I’m a better coach, because I think this is in a job where experience matters a lot. After having lived through so many experiences, learned from the positive and negative moments, I am much more prepared than in the past. It is a job in which you can only improve, until you lose the urge, but this is not my case. It is one thing to arrive here for the first time, where you had to learn a lot of things. I know the Italian culture, I also know something about Roma, because when I coached in Italy Roma was my antagonist, they fought with us.

We saw on Instagram that you have prepared a lot
I have prepared a lot. I cannot say and I do not want to say what I have done but I have prepared a lot. It’s my job. I need to know as much as possible, we are having a lot of meetings, we are talking a lot and we are trying to change some things in the club, so when I arrive in Trigoria the spaces will be more adequate than our ideas, our needs. The club is very helpful, everyone is very open and cooperative. I always say you get to know a player when you work on them together. But I’m trying to know as much as possible, but only when you are with them on the pitch, when you touch them, look them in the eye, when you perceive the situation, when you have positive moments and from there you start to know them.

The announcement of your arrival galvanized the fans. Freebies throughout the city. Did it galvanize you too?
The way people reacted… I don’t think I deserve it, because I haven’t done anything for them yet. Obviously it thrilled me. I was happy, grateful. Now I have an even greater responsibility because I cannot disappoint the fans. I can only say that what they did for me before I did something for them can only give me further motivation. Going back to the first day, the first conversation, the owners think the same way. I will do everything to repay, in the field, all the affection and passion they have given me, I thank them.
