I am possessive of his body; But if you are a housewife (in a derogatory tone), now mine, nobody can take it off me. These are just some of the phrases we heard in the first episode of Temptation Island, Wednesday 30 June, on Canale 5. For heaven’s sake, we mustn’t take it too seriously. We are still talking about an entertainment program, a game. But, as is well known, the messages that pass through the shows arrive more directly in homes than those delivered in cultural debates. In these times, then, where the man-woman theme is very hot, the bar of attention must be higher. This is why they hit these dynamics that we observed among the show’s six competing couples, who are questioning their bond, trying to resist the temptations of singles.

There are two cases: either there is an excellent script and the competitors do nothing but impersonate extreme roles that attract the attention of viewers, and that cause discussion (social networks have already been unleashed); or if everything is absolutely real, we need to worry about who we are. All of us. Because in the first case, perhaps it would be enough to clarify that a game, or to smooth out certain phrases, is not only macho, but also so ancient and anachronistic as to make people laugh (or cry). If, on the other hand, the phrases and attitudes of these young people 12 are the expression of the feelings and emotions that couples experience today, we must seriously question ourselves. And perhaps instead of the final falter, follow the reality show with an in-depth study with therapists, psychologists, and experts who explain the risks one faces when possessiveness, sick jealousy and arrogance enter the field. The chronicles teach us that where there is possession there is no love, where there is abuse, offense, selfishness nothing good is born.

I do not think it is fun to watch for hours the words of Tommaso, 20, boyfriend of Valentina, 40, who blurts out and vents because she puts on her bikini and shows her shapes to others (shapes that are mine alone), while instead I had made her wear only whole costumes. It is not even funny to hear one of the contestants refer to his partner in these terms: What does mom want to do if she can’t even do a washing machine! And again, it is not pleasant to watch Stefano’s scene that seeing his girlfriend flirting a little too much with the surfer Luke, has a violent outburst of uncontrolled anger and punches an innocent pouf of the scenography. Without excluding even Alessandro who only thinks about his abs and gets strange yogurt served to keep fit in a crescendo of absolute narcissism. The framework of relations does not bode well for the new generations. Let’s just hope it’s all a game.
